The following links to information, advice provides access to a range of key websites relating to resources, background information and discussion platforms.

The National Association of Teachers of Travellers + Other Professionals http://www.natt.org.uk provides a wide range of support for professionals who are involved in the education of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller pupils. This site includes links to individual Education Authorities – sharing good practice and showcasing resources they have developed. It also highlights a wide range of very useful background reading.

The National Literacy Trust http://www.literacytrust.org.uk/Database/travellers.html is an independent charity dedicated to building a literate nation. This site gives research information, guidance for schools in England and Wales, and links to direct work with Travellers and resources available.

Teachernet http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/ provides links to key documents and legislation in England and Wales e.g. Raising the Achievement of Gypsy Traveller Pupils A Guide to Good Practice

Passing Places http://www.passingplaces.org.uk/index.htm provides literacy and citizenship lessons focussing on Gypsy Traveller history, culture, lifestyle and traditions.

Fightgame http://www.fightgame.co.uk/ is an interactive resource to support the book by Kate Wild – where Freedom Smith, a Traveller boy, is the hero. A good discussion platform for minority cultures and discrimination.

The Kent NGFL http://www.kented.org.uk/ngfl/subjects/literacy/traveller/ site provides downloadable teaching resources and contacts to purchase materials to support the use of Traveller cultures in the Literacy Hour.

 

Insight into the lives of Gypsy and Traveller People

One Scotland http://www.onescotland.com is the Scottish Executive campaign designed to tackle racism in this country. It aims to raise awareness of racist attitudes and highlight its negative impact, to make Scotland no place for racism. In the 'Tell Your Story' section you will find stories by Gypsy/Travellers.

Time Travellers http://www.time-travellers.org.uk was launched by Save the Children. This site contains interesting information regarding the Cultures, education, work and homes of Scottish Travellers.

The Gypsies http://www.scottishgypsies.co.uk/ documents the history of Scottish Gypsy families – mainly from the Scottish Borders.

The BBC Devon programme, 'From Where I Stand Now' http://www.bbc.co.uk/devon/community_life/features/romany.shtml highlights a feature on Traveller life in Devon. Pictures and text relating to a Gypsy/Traveller life.

Home Truths: A Romany Life http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hometruths/0321romany_life.shtml is a BBC radio programme about Romany life. Here you can listen to the programme and read a summary of a Romany life. This site provides useful links for further background information

Travellers Tairing http://www.travellers-tairing.com/ is a website contains stories and creative digital content which reflects the lives and experiences of the Irish Traveller Community in Tara Park, Liverpool. Translated from Cant, the Irish Traveller Language, Traveller's Tairing means Travellers telling Stories.

The European Network Against Racism http://www.enar-eu.org provides links to useful documents relating to Gypsies and Travellers in the European context.

The Roma Education Resource Book http://www.osi.hu/iep/minorities/ResBook1/ResBook.htm provides an excellent link to articles and books relating to Roma. Follow 'View the whole book as one html page' link to access.

Friends, Families and Travellers http://www.gypsy-traveller.org/ is a charity that works on behalf of all Gypsies and Travellers regardless of ethnicity, culture or background. The Cyber Pilots http://www.gypsy-traveller.org/cyberpilots/e_learn.htm part of the site is an interactive meeting place for Gypsy, Traveller, Bargee and Showmen children and young people

National Fairground Archive, University of Sheffield http://www.shef.ac.uk/nfa/ presents a collection of photographic, printed, manuscript and audiovisual material covering all aspects of the cultures of travelling show people, their organisation as communities, their social history and everyday life; and the artefacts and machinery of fairgrounds.


Publications/Journals for Gypsies and Travellers

Traveller Times http://www.travellerstimes.org.uk is the UK magazine for Gypsies and Travellers and those who work with Gypsies and Travellers, sharing information, contacts, news and views.

The Travellers’ School Charity http://www.travellersschool.plus.com is a charitable trust, which provides advice and support for Travellers and their children to access education.

World’s Fair http://www.worldsfair.co.uk/wf/ is a weekly newspaper encompassing the interests of travelling showpeople, funfair enthusiasts, circus lovers and the steam rally and preservation industry.
