News and EventsWhat does "additional support for learning" mean to a young person?Enquire recently launched its new young people’s website http://www.enquire.org.uk/yp/ The event, which took place in Edinburgh at the Children in Scotland Offices, was attended by people from different backgrounds, an observation that signals the wide appeal of Additional Support for Learning approaches to meeting children’s unmet learning needs. The launch started with talks on how the site closely follows international guidelines for accessibility, and how young people were consulted on the draft design. Enquire staff then demonstrated the new features of the site to small groups of attendees. This interesting and informative event gave lots of time for questions and trying out the new website. The website provides a great opportunity for children and young people to use the popular “blog” at http://www.enquire.org.uk/youngpeople/wordpress/ - an online diary where children can ask any questions and interact with other children, answer questions and read other children’s views. The website also provides useful downloadable guides/resources, such as “Getting help with exams”, and a resource called “Nadia’s Story” that suggests effective ways for children to deal with bullying in schools. Enquire have noticed that children tend not to use their helpline. After consulting with children this new website was designed to be colourful, use images and provide some fun. Its use of plain language, British Sign Languaue and auditory toolds have helped the designers deliver an exciting and easy to navigate website. It also uses Picture Communication (Boardmaker) symbols.
Enquire – an advice service to help children and parents find out about how to get additional support for learning - is managed by Children in Scotland, the national agency for voluntary, statutory and professional organizations and individuals working with children and their families. Enquire is funded by the Scottish Government, and Children in Scotland is funded by various sources, its members, grants from the Scottish Government, voluntary agencies, local authorities, corporate trusts and individual donations. Enquire produces a newsletter for parents every four months – Enquire Within. It also produces publications for children and young people, parents and people who work with children and young people such as The Parents Guide to Additional Support for Learning and a series of factsheets on different topics. Children in Scotland produce a newsletter called Moving Forward on behalf of the Scottish Government. This newsletter provides information on the implementation of the Additional Support for Learning Act.
