Gypsy/Traveller child attends art classesreturn to main Positive Images page In South Ayrshire a teacher has been working with a secondary aged Gypsy/Traveller girl to enable her to access the curriculum from the site where she lives. The EAL teacher, as part of her remit with the Central Peripatetic Support Services, supports this child who stays on the site in Girvan. During a restricted time slot each week, they have covered as many subjects from the S1 curriculum as possible. The teacher has also encouraged and supported the pupil to broaden her interests by working at home on topics such as news and current affairs and issues relating to the environment and global citizenship. The pupil has developed her knowledge in these areas through working on a project based around China. Learning about these topics and issues has also provided her with an opportunity to use her creative and artistic skills. You can see the examples below of the colourful and interesting display she created in the communal trailer on the Houdston Travelling Person's Site in Girvan.
Everyone who comes in can see and enjoy this colourful display. The teacher's work with the pupil has been instrumental in encouraging her to attend secondary school to take part in art classes with her peer group. An initial visit to the art department at the local secondary school, supported by the Principal Teacher of Art, allowed for this transition to take place. Other subject teachers in the school have provided resources for the girl and her teacher to work on in the communal trailer. This is an excellent example of positive partnership working between child, family, the EAL teacher and mainstream school. return to main Positive Images page
