We are the Gypsy Kids - Gypsy/Traveller Video ProjectA tribute to Rachel Hiltonreturn to main Positive Images page This 'positive image' is STEP's tribute to Rachel Hilton who died in May 2006. Rachel's death was a shock to her family, to Gypsy/Traveller communities up and down Scotland, and to all those who worked with her. Rachel, a Gypsy/Traveller, worked long and hard in raising public awareness of Gypsy/Traveller children's educational needs, was well known for her working with families and local authorities, and in helping their delivery of improved services for Gypsy/Traveller families. Rachel's 'working with' people from different backgrounds demonstrated that 'working with' is the best way of getting things done. And, what is most important to say - people liked her. These achievements are a testimony to Rachel, which STEP hopes will sustain her family and friends, now and in the future. Background Information - Gypsy /Traveller Video Project
Artist Iain Piercey and musician Ricky Traynor, both from Project Ability, led the project with support from the Gypsy/Traveller Community Development Project* and Universal Connections - www.project-ability.co.uk The young people involved determined the content of the film. Over 2 months ideas were generated, and imagery and a sound track were compiled resulting in 2 short films being produced. The DVD, 'We are the Gypsy Kids' is the finished result. It is a lively and entertaining, yet thought provoking DVD showing a snapshot of Gypsy/ Traveller young people in the Larkhall area talking about their lives, views and aspirations. "I want to be a pop star" says young Natalia; this is surely an ambition of many children of that age. The young man who wants to be a roofer is older and wiser and can see the reality ahead and the need to work to survive. These young people are a shining example of young people today and their ambition and determination to succeed. As Gypsy/Traveller children they have chosen to take part in a project to show this. All of those involved in the production have done an excellent job in producing a DVD, which highlights the fact that Gypsy/Traveller children share ideas for the future similar to any child from the settled community. *This project has recently closed return to main Positive Images page
