Resources: LibraryDr. Betty Jordan, STEP’s founding director, gathered a collection of valuable and historic books and items about Gypsy and Traveller communities. STEP has worked with library staff to produce a new Gypsy and Traveller Special Collection, which has been established in the Special Collections Department at the University of Edinburgh’s Main Library in George Square. These important resources are housed in the correct conditions and temperature, and while ensuring its wider access for researchers, the contents of the collection can also be searched through the University’s web-based 'collections gateway'. Further work is required before this data can be accessed, which we hope will be available by the end of 2007. A Special Collection of historic books and materials has been set up in the University of Edinburgh main library that will be available to interested readers after September 2007
Resources: TeachingMeanwhile a collection of educational books and resources for schools and teachers can be consulted at STEP: by appointment. Please make contact in advance to ensure STEP staff will be available to help you, either by telephone: 0131 651 6444, or email: step@education.ed.ac.uk. STEP’s teaching resources will support 3 main areas of learning and teaching:
Information about STEP’s educational resources can also be accessed either by telephone: 0131 651 6444, (the best day to make contact is usually a Tuesday) or by email: step@education.ed.ac.uk. Some important initial information, particularly for teachers newly appointed to support Gypsy and Traveller education, is accessible through STEP’s website via the ‘For Teachers’ link. A resources list is currently being developed ready for September 2007. These materials will be organized to meet teachers’ needs in supporting primary and secondary pupils. It will also include age/appropriate materials to help teachers address pupils’ interrupted learning needs.
