Resources: Library

Dr. Betty Jordan collected a valuable set of historic books and items relating to Scotland’s Traveller communities, which have been given to The University of Edinburgh. STEP worked with its archivists to ensure the availability of these materials for consultation by scholars and interested individuals. Called the STEP Collection, it is housed in the correct conditions and temperatures in the Special Collections Department at the University of Edinburgh’s Main Library in George Square. A database of its contents is searchable by author and by title at: http://www.lib.ed.ac.uk/resources/collections/specdivision/step/php

Should you wish to consult the collection please make an appointment by contacting: Joe Marshall, Rare Books Librarian, Centre for Research Collections, The Edinburgh University Library, George Square, EH8 9LJ. Tel. 0131 650 6864 – Email. Joseph.marshall@ed.ac.uk

The University of Edinburgh’s School of Scottish Studies Archives houses substantial resources in its sound archive that relate to Scottish Travellers. In addition is holds the Rehfisch papers and some photographic materials.

Should you wish to consult the collection please make an appointment by contacting: Cathlin Macaulay, 27 George Square, EH8 9LD. Tel. 0131 650 4159 – Email. Cathlin.Macaulay@ed.ac.uk or celtscot@ed.ac.uk.

Both collections would be of interest and value to research scholars and individuals interested in the history of Scotland’s Travelling peoples.

Resources: Teaching

Meanwhile a collection of educational books and resources for schools and teachers can be consulted at STEP: by appointment. Please make contact in advance to ensure STEP staff will be available to help you, either by telephone: 0131 651 6444, or email: step@ed.ac.uk.

STEP’s teaching resources will support 3 main areas of learning and teaching:

  1. Resources for Primary and Secondary Teachers for direct use with children and young people from Traveller families.

  2. Background reading, and videos/DVDs, for those working with Traveller families.

  3. Information for Travelling families about their rights and responsibilities regarding their schooling choices for their children and young people.

Information about STEP’s educational resources can also be accessed either by telephone: 0131 651 6444, (the best day to make contact is usually a Tuesday) or by email: step@ed.ac.uk. Important initial information, particularly for teachers and support workers newly appointed to support Gypsy and Traveller education, is accessible through STEP’s website via the ‘For Teachers’ link.
