Pauline became Director of STEP in October 2005. She came to STEP at the end of the year 2000, after finishing doctoral research into the question 'why are more boys than girls excluded from school?' Her background prior to that was in sociology and history at The University of Edinburgh. Pauline can be contacted at STEP from Monday to Thursday.
Research at STEP
Her initial research at STEP examined the provision of laptop computers and other ICT peripherals for teachers and pupils working in out-of-school settings, which included provision for Gypsy/Traveller learners. She researched the extent of enrolment, attendance and attainment of Gypsy/Traveller learners in Scottish Education, and more recently the impact of the National Guidance, 'Inclusive Educational Approaches for Gypsies and Travellers within the context of interrupted learning', on local authorities’ and schools' policy and practice in this area.
She has recently been awarded a Grant from the Scottish Government to take forward an aspect of its Race, Religion and Refugee Integration work (November 2008 – March 2011). The Grant will fund the appointment of a facilitator with a remit to work in partnership with self-identifying education authorities. Based at STEP the facilitator will coordinate education authorities’ setting up and delivery of a pilot e-learning community designed to meet the learning needs of mobile Gypsy/Traveller pupils, and those requiring Education Authority ‘education outwith school’ services. The pilot will also include Glasgow City Council’s ICT supported distance learning service for Showtraveller children and young people.
